How to Search the Catalogue

Searching the Catalogue from the Power Search Screen

  • Words or Phrase Search: type in keywords for your topic
    • e.g. “globalization” and “media”
  • Author Search: type in the exact name of author or authoring organization
    • e.g. “Atwood, Margaret” or “Statistics Canada”
  • Title Search: type in all or portion of a known title
    • e.g. Nursing Diagnosis Handbook
  • Subject Search: use this option if you know the subject heading
    • e.g. “Technology—Social Aspects”(For help with subject headings, ask the Research & Data Services desk)
  • Series Search: this option will display all the titles in a series
    • e.g. “Penguin Classics”
  • Periodical Title Search: use to search for a particular magazine or academic journal
    • e.g. Rolling Stone
  • ISBN Search: use to search the International Standard Book Number (ISBN)
    • e.g. “9780771008467” will locate Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam
  • ISSN Search: The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is assigned to magazines and journals and can be used the same way as an ISBN
    • e.g. “0001-8899” will locate Advertising Age

Limiting & Sorting Your Search


  • Library: results are restricted to specified campus library
    • e.g. “London Campus Library”
  • Language: allows you to specify the language of the materials retrieved
    • e.g. “French”, “Spanish”
  • Type: choose the medium of your search results
    • e.g. book, video, DVD, etc.
  • Location: limit search results to materials located in a particular section of the library
    • e.g. 1st floor, reserve desk, etc.
  • Pubyear: find items published in a particular year
    • e.g. 1988, 2004
  • Sort by:
    • Author: results displayed alphabetically by author’s surname
    • Subject: results displayed alphabetically by subject heading
    • Title: results displayed alphabetically by title
    • Old to New: results listed beginning with the oldest and ending with the newest
    • New to Old: results listed beginning with the newest and ending with the oldest

Search Results

From the Search Results screen, clicking on the highlighted title gives you access to more information about the item. If your search produces only one result, you will automatically be directed the Item Details screen:

Click on any of the Subject Term link to display a list of all items catalogued under that specific heading.

Course Reserves

Course Reserves are materials that instructors have set aside for specific courses and are available for short term loan periods: 2 hours, 1 day & 3 days. They are located and can be checked out at the Circulation desk.
