Prepare to Learn is a workshop series designed to provide incoming students with skills and resources to help them transition to learning at Fanshawe College.

Students are welcome to register for one or all of the workshop sessions. See the links below for more details and registration information.

Introduction to FOL Workshop
Tuesday, July 27, 2021
9 - 10 a.m.

This workshop will prepare you for Fanshawe College’s learning platform: FanshaweOnline (FOL). Over the hour, you will be guided through the use of FOL’s most widely used tools so you feel comfortable working with them prior to starting your academic course.

Web Tools Workshop
Thursday, July 29, 2021
9 - 10 a.m.

This workshop will prepare you for Fanshawe College’s main video conferencing platforms that will be used during your academic program: Zoom, Web Ex, and Bongo.

The math workshop series covers the following essential topics: fractions, basic algebra, solving and rearranging equations, and percentages. It includes live sessions, video tutorials, worksheets with solutions, and self-evaluation quizzes.

This workshop series is unique in that students register for a four-part series of workshops. Students should attend all four workshops in a series because the skills taught build from previous sessions.

There are four options to choose from:

  • Math Option A: Face-to-face virtual series (1 - 3 p.m.) Tuesday, July 27, August 3, 10 & 17
  • Math Option B: Face-to-face virtual series (6 - 8 p.m.) Tuesday, July 27, August 3, 10 & 17
  • Math Option C: Face-to-face virtual series (10 a.m. - Noon) Wednesday, July 28, August 4, 11 & 18
  • Math Option D: Online self-guided series, with optional "live help" hours (7 - 8 p.m.) Wednesday, July 28, August 4, 11 & 18

HOW TO REGISTER:

Students can self-register for a the math workshop series on FanshaweOnline (FOL). Go to the FOL home page, sign in and locate the Resources dropdown menu. Select Self-Registration and then register for Prepare to Learn. Once registered, you will be prompted to choose which math series option you would like to be enrolled in.

*This FOL course will also contain the extra resources from other Prepare to Learn workshops.

Study Strategies Workshop
Tuesday, August 3, 2021
9 - 10 a.m.

Academic success is rooted in daily study behaviour.  This workshop will address how the brain takes in information, digests, and stores course content within the long-term memory.  Moreover, you will leave the workshop with useful tips on when and how to read text books, listening and note-taking strategies, and time management techniques.

Multiple Choice Testing Strategies Workshop

Academic success is not only rooted in quality study practices, but also in effectively navigating quizzes/tests/exams.  This workshop will provide numerous strategies to employ while taking a multiple choice exam.

Introduction to APA Citation Style Workshop

APA citation style is used to prevent plagiarism by showing where source material has been included in assignments. This workshop will introduce APA citation style, including reference and in-text citation format, and share helpful resources so that you will feel more confident using APA.

This workshop will help you understand the principles of academic integrity and explore the college’s official policy to familiarize yourself with academic offences, penalties, and tips for avoiding plagiarism.

Delve into the wealth of resources, services, and supports that the Library Learning Commons has to offer, and take the first steps into your research by creating an effective search strategy using pre-search, keywords, and concept mapping.

Parent and Student Supporter Workshop
Thursday, August 26, 2021
9 - 10 a.m.

This session provides parents and supporters information about the Library Learning Commons' resources and services, including the following:

  • Math help
  • English help
  • English as a Second Language help
  • Research help
  • Study skills help
  • Peer tutoring
  • Academic integrity support
  • Print and database resources
  • Study spaces
  • Indigenous space

A complementary non-credit course is available to provide students with all resources and tools from these workshops. Workshops (with the exception of the math series) will be recorded and posted in this course after they are held.
