Prepare To Learn

Prepare to Learn is a workshop series designed to provide incoming students with skills and resources to help them transition to learning at Fanshawe College.

Students are welcome to register for one or all of the workshop sessions. See the links below for more details and registration information.

**Note: The following steps apply to every workshop except the Math workshop series. For Math-specific registration information, click the “Math” accordion below.

Step 1: Click the accordions below to view more details and registration info for each workshop.

Step 2: Click the red “REGISTER HERE” link for the workshop you would like to join. You can individually register for as many workshops as you’d like.

Step 3: In the new event page that will appear, click the blue “Begin Registration” button.

Step 4: Enter your name and email address, then click the blue “Register” button.

Step 5: A confirmation email will be sent to you immediately upon registering and one will also be sent the day before the workshop. Both will include a Zoom link to your session that you can join at the scheduled workshop date and time. Please mark the date in your calendar.

*Repeat as needed for the other workshops you are interested in. You will receive separate confirmation emails for each workshop you register for.

Summer 2021 Workshop Series

Introduction to FOL Workshop
Tuesday, July 27, 2021
9 - 10 a.m.

This workshop will prepare you for Fanshawe College’s learning platform: FanshaweOnline (FOL). Over the hour, you will be guided through the use of FOL’s most widely used tools so you feel comfortable working with them prior to starting your academic course.

Web Tools Workshop
Thursday, July 29, 2021
9 - 10 a.m.

This workshop will prepare you for Fanshawe College’s main video conferencing platforms that will be used during your academic program: Zoom, Web Ex, and Bongo.

The math workshop series covers the following essential topics: fractions, basic algebra, solving and rearranging equations, and percentages. It includes live sessions, video tutorials, worksheets with solutions, and self-evaluation quizzes.

This workshop series is unique in that students register for a four-part series of workshops. Students should attend all four workshops in a series because the skills taught build from previous sessions.

There are four options to choose from:

  • Math Option A: Face-to-face virtual series (1 - 3 p.m.) Tuesday, July 27, August 3, 10 & 17
  • Math Option B: Face-to-face virtual series (6 - 8 p.m.) Tuesday, July 27, August 3, 10 & 17
  • Math Option C: Face-to-face virtual series (10 a.m. - Noon) Wednesday, July 28, August 4, 11 & 18
  • Math Option D: Online self-guided series, with optional "live help" hours (7 - 8 p.m.) Wednesday, July 28, August 4, 11 & 18

 

HOW TO REGISTER FOR MATH SESSIONS:

Students can self-register for a the math workshop series on FanshaweOnline (FOL). Go to the FOL home page, sign in and locate the Resources dropdown menu. Select Self-Registration and then register for Prepare to Learn. Once registered, you will be prompted to choose which math series option you would like to be enrolled in.

*This FOL course will also contain the extra resources from other Prepare to Learn workshops.

Study Strategies Workshop
Tuesday, August 3, 2021
9 - 10 a.m.

Academic success is rooted in daily study behaviour.  This workshop will address how the brain takes in information, digests, and stores course content within the long-term memory.  Moreover, you will leave the workshop with useful tips on when and how to read text books, listening and note-taking strategies, and time management techniques.

Multiple Choice Testing Strategies Workshop

Academic success is not only rooted in quality study practices, but also in effectively navigating quizzes/tests/exams.  This workshop will provide numerous strategies to employ while taking a multiple choice exam.

Learn about common writing assignments and expectations at Fanshawe College. The session will provide strategies to help you improve your writing.

Introduction to APA Citation Style Workshop

APA citation style is used to prevent plagiarism by showing where source material has been included in assignments. This workshop will introduce APA citation style, including reference and in-text citation format, and share helpful resources so that you will feel more confident using APA.

Paraphrasing Workshop

Paraphrasing is used in essays and reports in order to put ideas into your own words. This workshop will provide paraphrasing tips and strategies to improve writing and avoid plagiarism.

This workshop will help you understand the principles of academic integrity and explore the college’s official policy to familiarize yourself with academic offences, penalties, and tips for avoiding plagiarism.

Parent and Student Supporter Workshop

This session provides parents and supporters information about the Library Learning Commons' resources and services, including the following:

A complementary non-credit course is available to provide students with all resources and tools from these workshops. Workshops (with the exception of the math series) will be recorded and posted in this course after they are held.

Students can self-register for this course on FanshaweOnline (FOL). Go to the FOL home page, sign in and locate the Resources dropdown menu. Select Self-Registration and then register for Prepare to Learn.

*Please note that this FOL course is the same one used to register for the math workshop series listed above. You may choose to enroll in the math workshop series upon registering for this course, but if you don’t wish to, simply remain in the ‘self-guided’ selection.
